Privacy policy
Last updated 19 October 2026
The short version. We never receive your information. Strokes Given has no account, no servers and no analytics. Your players, scores, rounds and notes are kept on your iPhone. Your location is used on your phone during a round and is never sent anywhere. The one thing the app downloads is a course's hole map from OpenStreetMap, when you add that course.
1. Who we are
Strokes Given is made by SPENCER AI (ABN 31 978 335 623), Victoria, Australia ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to information in the Strokes Given app for iPhone and on this website. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
2. What Strokes Given keeps, and where
You enter things like your name, your handicap index and GOLF Link number, the players you golf with (their names, handicap indexes, GOLF Link numbers and tees), your courses and their ratings, scores and past games, golf trips and teams, your club yardages, swing thoughts, course notes and practice drills.
- On your iPhone. All of this is saved inside the app's own storage on your phone. It is included in your own iPhone backup (iCloud Backup or your computer) if you use one. That backup is controlled by your Apple ID, not by us.
- Not on our servers. We don't have any. There's no account, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code. Its fonts are built into the app.
- Other people's details. When you add a mate, you're entering their name and handicap details on your own phone. Please only add people who are happy for you to. It stays on your phone and is never sent to us.
3. Your location
If you allow it, Strokes Given uses your location while the app is open:
- during a round, to show where you are on the hole and how far you are from the green and the pin;
- when you tap Near me, to sort the course list by distance.
Your location is worked out and used on your phone only. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and the app only watches it while a round's scoring screen is open. You can turn location off at any time in Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services. The rest of the app works without it.
4. Course maps from OpenStreetMap
When you add an Australian course, the app downloads that course's hole map (holes, greens, tees, fairways, bunkers and water) from the public OpenStreetMap data service (Overpass, at overpass-api.de, with a backup service). The request names the course, not you, and doesn't include your location. Like any internet request, the service receives your phone's IP address. The map is then kept on your phone, so it isn't downloaded again. The list of courses itself is built into the app.
5. Crash reports
If you have turned on "Share with App Developers" in your iPhone settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports and usage statistics with us. They don't identify you, and you can turn this off at any time in Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements.
6. This website, and emailing us
This website has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking, and loads nothing from other companies. Like any website, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and pages requested) for security. If you email us, we use your email only to reply to you, and delete it when we no longer need it.
Overseas. We don't send your app data anywhere. The OpenStreetMap services the app downloads course maps from are run outside Australia. Our website host and email provider may store website logs and emails on servers outside Australia.
7. Deleting your data
- In the app: you can remove any player, note, swing thought, drill or course. When the app first opens with example data, Start fresh clears it.
- Delete the app: removing Strokes Given from your iPhone removes everything it stored.
- Backups: older iPhone backups may still contain the app's data until they are replaced or deleted.
Because we never receive your data, we can't see it, correct it or get it back for you.
8. Your rights
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it, and you can deal with us without giving your name. For the app, the answer is none: it all stays on your phone, where you can see, change and delete it yourself. Wherever you live, you also have any rights your local privacy law gives you, and you can contact us about them.
9. Changes
If we change how Strokes Given handles information, we'll update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in the app before a change that affects what happens to your data.
10. Contact and complaints
SPENCER AI (ABN 31 978 335 623), Victoria, Australia. Email welcome@myspencer.ai with any question or complaint about privacy, and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our reply, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
