Terms of use
Last updated 19 October 2026
The short version. Strokes Given works out course handicaps, playing handicaps and shots from the handicap index you enter, and keeps score for you and your group. It isn't an official handicap service and isn't connected to Golf Australia. Distances come from your phone's GPS and OpenStreetMap maps and are estimates. Nothing here takes away rights the law says you always have.
1. Who we are, and agreeing to these terms
Strokes Given is made by SPENCER AI (ABN 31 978 335 623), Victoria, Australia ("we", "us"). These terms are an agreement between you and us about the Strokes Given app for iPhone and this website (together, "Strokes Given"). By downloading or using Strokes Given you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
2. Handicaps, shots and scores
- Strokes Given does not work out or keep your handicap index. You enter each player's index yourself, for example from the Golf Australia app. If an index is wrong or out of date, the shots will be too.
- Course handicaps, playing handicaps, shots given, points and results are worked out by software from the index, tees, course rating, slope and stroke index you enter, using common allowances for each game. Your club or competition may use different allowances or rules. Where they differ, theirs apply.
- Strokes Given is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Golf Australia, GOLF Link or any golf club, and doesn't submit scores for handicapping.
3. Distances and course maps
Hole maps come from OpenStreetMap, which is made by volunteers and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and some courses aren't mapped at all. Distances depend on your phone's GPS. Treat every distance as an estimate, and check the rules of your competition before using any distance-measuring device. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (openstreetmap.org/copyright).
4. On the course
Please don't use your phone where it puts you or anyone else at risk. Watch for other groups and flying balls, and follow your club's rules about phones and pace of play.
5. Your data
Strokes Given keeps what you enter on your phone. We don't receive it, so we can't back it up or get it back for you. Our privacy policy explains this in full.
6. Using Strokes Given properly
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Strokes Given on Apple devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use. Please don't copy, sell, rebrand or redistribute the app or its content, reverse-engineer or tamper with it (except where the law allows), or use it in a way that breaks the law or harms anyone.
The app, its artwork and text belong to us or are used with permission. What you write and log is yours.
Fonts. Strokes Given uses the fonts Kalam, Outfit, Plus Jakarta Sans and Anton under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
7. Changes and availability
As far as the law allows, we provide Strokes Given "as is" and "as available", without any promise that it will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, error-free or suitable for your purpose. We may update, change or stop Strokes Given or any part of it.
8. Your rights under consumer law
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that can't be excluded, restricted or changed by agreement, including consumer guarantees. If you live outside Australia, you may also have rights under your local law that these terms can't take away. Every part of these terms applies only as far as the law allows.
9. Limits on our responsibility
As far as the law allows:
- we give no promises about Strokes Given other than those in these terms or that the law says must apply;
- we aren't responsible for results, bets, prizes or decisions based on Strokes Given's shots, scores or distances;
- we aren't responsible for any indirect or consequential loss, or any loss of data, records, opportunity or enjoyment;
- where the law lets us limit our responsibility for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our responsibility is limited to supplying the service again or paying the cost of having it supplied again;
- otherwise, our total responsibility to you for everything to do with Strokes Given is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Strokes Given in the 12 months before the claim, or AUD $50.
None of this limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.
10. If something goes wrong
Email welcome@myspencer.ai with what happened and what you'd like us to do, and we'll try to sort it out quickly and fairly. You can also contact a consumer protection agency (in Victoria, Consumer Affairs Victoria), a regulator, or a court or tribunal at any time.

If you got Strokes Given from Apple's App Store:

- you may use Strokes Given on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the App Store's Usage Rules;
- Apple has no duty to provide maintenance or support for Strokes Given;
- if Strokes Given fails to meet any warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price. As far as the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Strokes Given;
- Apple isn't responsible for any claims about Strokes Given, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and consumer protection or privacy claims. We are responsible for dealing with those;
- if anyone claims that Strokes Given, or your having or using it, infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and resolving that claim;
- you must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use Strokes Given, such as your mobile or internet provider's terms;
- you confirm that you are not in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or listed as a terrorist-supporting country, and you're not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties;
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and can enforce them against you.
12. General
Law. These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia. Courts in Victoria can hear disputes about them, but you can also use the courts where you live if your local law gives you that right.
Changes to these terms. We may update these terms, for example when Strokes Given or the law changes. We'll update the date at the top and, for a significant change, tell you in the app before it takes effect. A change won't apply to anything that happened before it. If you don't agree with a change, you can stop using Strokes Given and delete it.
If part doesn't work. If any part of these terms can't be enforced, it's cut back only as much as needed, and the rest still applies.
No waiver. If we don't enforce something straight away, we can still enforce it later.
The whole agreement. These terms and our privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Strokes Given.
Moving the agreement. We may transfer these terms to another business that takes over Strokes Given, as long as your rights under them stay the same.
