Handicaps and shots

Where do the handicaps come from?

From you. Enter each player's handicap index from the Golf Australia app or golf.com.au. Strokes Given then works out each course handicap for the tees they play, the playing handicap for the game, and the shots. It doesn't calculate a handicap index.

How are shots worked out?

Course handicap = index × slope ÷ 113 + (course rating − par). Playing handicap = course handicap × the game's allowance. In match play, everyone gets the difference from the lowest playing handicap in the match, on the hardest holes first (stroke index 1, 2, 3 and on). Tap the i next to Shots given, or Show the working, to see every step.

Why does it say a player's index needs checking?

Indexes change after every round. Strokes Given stamps the date when you update an index, and flags any that are more than a month old.

Our club uses different allowances.

Your club's rules win. Strokes Given uses common allowances: Stableford and net stroke 95%, 4BBB 85%, fourball 90%, singles 100%, foursomes 50% of the pair, and Ambrose combined divided by 4 or 8.

Can I enter a plus handicap?

Yes. Type it with a plus sign, like +1.4.

Courses and distances

My course has no hole map.

Hole maps come from OpenStreetMap. If a course isn't mapped there yet, you can still play it: enter the pars and stroke index from the scorecard. The rating and slope always come off the scorecard, for each set of tees.

The distances look wrong.

Check that location is on for Strokes Given (Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services) and give the GPS a moment. The accuracy shows on the hole map. If the green on the map is in the wrong spot, the OpenStreetMap drawing may be out of date. Tap the green to set today's pin.

Does it work without reception?

Yes, once your course is added. Its map is kept on your phone, and scoring doesn't need the internet. Adding a new course's map needs a connection.

Golf trips

How does the cup score work?

In match play, each match is worth a point, and a halved match is half each. In a stroke game, the better team total wins the session's point. Every session adds to the trip's cup.

We have an odd number of players.

Tap anyone to sit them out of a session. Strokes Given tells you who would be without a game before you tee off.
